Abstract

Background: Breast engorgmenet is a narrowing of the lactiferous ducts due to increased venous and lymph flow which is affected by the ineffectiveness of emptying milk. Breast engorgement usually occurs in the first 0-6 months of breastfeeding mothers. Symptoms that usually arise are pain, tenderness, redness, hardness and tension in the breast. Hot compresses can be used as a non-pharmacological treatment for breast engorgment.). Purpose: To provide nursing care for acute pain due to breast engorgment in nursing mothers. Methods: The data collection technique used two respondents to determine the pain scale and breast swelling scale. Apply hot compresses 3x in 3 days for 10-15 minutes. Every day respondents were assessed for pain using the VAS scale (Visual analog scale) and the SPES (Six Point Engorgement Scale) breast swelling scale. Results: The two respondents experienced a decrease in the degree of breast swelling, the SPES value of respondent 1 from a scale of 5 (moderate breast engorgment) to a scale of 1 (mild breast engorgment) and respondent 2 from a scale of 5 (moderate breast engorgment) to a scale of 2 (mild breast engorgment) ). There was a decrease in the pain scale, for respondent 1 the pain scale was 6 to a scale of 1 while respondent 2 from a pain scale of 5 went down to a scale of 2. Conclusion: This study hot compresses can be used as a non-pharmacological technique to reduce the pain scale due to breast engorgement.
